About Netflix
Netflix is a leading global streaming entertainment service that offers a wide variety of TV shows, movies, documentaries, and original content on demand. It revolutionized how people watch media by moving from DVD rentals to online streaming, and eventually becoming a major content creator in its own right.
📺 What Netflix Does: Streaming: Offers subscription-based, ad-free (and ad-supported) plans for watching TV shows, movies, anime, and more.
Original Content: Known for producing award-winning originals under the Netflix Originals banner, such as:
Stranger Things The Crown Bridgerton Wednesday The Witcher Squid Game (international hit)
Genres: Covers everything from drama and comedy to true crime, sci-fi, stand-up specials, kids' programming, and foreign-language content
The Crown is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed series on Netflix. The seasons of The Crown starring Olivia Colman—Seasons 3 and 4—were both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, marking some of the series' highest-profile moments to date.
đź‘‘ Olivia Colman's Role: Played Queen Elizabeth II in Seasons 3 (2019) and Season 4 (2020) Took over the role from Claire Foy as the show transitioned to depict the monarch's middle years.
The Project
Due to the success of The Crown, Netflix wanted to create two limited edition Christmas sweaters to give as gifts. They wanted to create one that included an image of Olivia Colman as the Queen and one with an image of the Queen’s favorite dog-the Corgi.
The Making of the Sweater
Netflix wanted the sweater in the style of the famous Bill Murray Christmas sweater. That style involved a different knitting technique to the fully custom knitted ones. They are also fully custom but there are extra steps in the production process involved due to the image on the front so that a photo style finish could be achieved. Netflix also wanted two custom labels on each. Roody made the custom label for the inside of the neck and another Netflix custom label for the front hem of the sweater. This signified that these were exclusive officially licensed merch. Roody shipped the sweaters to two different bases.
The Result
The success of The Crown Christmas sweater marked a broader win for Netflix’s branded apparel strategy. It showed that when done right—especially with the right merch partner—TV-themed fashion can resonate well beyond the screen. Netflix have since opened multiple pop ups with custom merch for different shows. There newest one will even include Meghan Markle’s merch from her As Ever brand.
